Managing Director

John possesses a wide span of practical and academic experience in risk management, strategic planning, and finance, currently specialising in enterprise risk management and its relationship with strategy. He has run and consulted to risk management, accounting and planning functions, and has been responsible for running large accounting and management information systems. Since 1996 John has been Managing Director of Hargreaves Risk and Strategy.

Whilst Corporate Finance Director at Barclays Bank, John was responsible for assessing the Group’s total risk profile and capital requirements. He installed risk-adjusted control measures, credit grading, risk-pricing, portfolio models and an information warehouse.

As Finance Director and Company Secretary at London Underground John ran a 700–strong department with responsibilities for the finance and company secretary functions, but additionally for corporate planning and investment control, IT, internal audit and the mathematical analysis of system safety following the Kings Cross fire.

As Treasury Manager/Investment Research Manager at Shell International Petroleum Company he was the second in command of a team with responsibility for the Group Central Funds totalling over £5bn. As the Head of Group Financial Systems Operations, John was in charge of complex financial system including the world’s largest consolidation and was responsible for two dedicated mainframes.

As Financial Controller at National Freight Corporation, John was responsible for their management accounts, financial controls, and project approvals.

John is a Chartered Accountant and has a mathematics degree from Cambridge University. Between 1990 and 2007 he ran an MSc level Strategic Management course at London School of Economics.
