cultural due diligence

The following could be the beginning of a story familiar to many housing association boards.

Two London-based associations, Victoria HA (VHA) and Albert HA (AHA) decided to merge. The merger had been discussed for almost 5 years.  The original plan called for a three-way merger but the third party had pulled out late in the merger process.  The merger was promoted as a 'Partnership of Equals'. However, there was a general perception by staff at AHA that they were being taken over by VHA.

Hargreaves Risk and Strategy can help merging organizations with:

Cultural due diligence - assessing the cultural compatibility of the prospective merger partners to ensure a cultural fit as part of the due diligence process. Having made a choice, chief executives and management will be in a position to address incompatibility issues early.

Organisational development - In association with Dr Mary Logan (LSE) we undertake organizational development exercises that add a management aspect to the cultural due diligence process by:

Surveying and analysing merging cultures
. Holding workshops with the management teams and staff
. Ensuring open communication of the results by use of impartial outsiders

words of wisdom

"Quality is the result of a carefully constructed cultural environment. It has to be the fabric of the organization, not part of the fabric."
